Fayette County has the distinction of being, culturally and geographically, one of the few crossroads of Texas from time immortal. Prehistoric mammals migrated through this area and later early humans. The Colorado River, which dissects Texas and Fayette County, was the center of life for the Native American Tribes and a focus of the French and Spanish explorers. Stephen F. Austin included future Fayette County in the Old 300 land grant. When Germans and Czechs began immigrating to Texas, thousands of families chose Fayette County for their homes. When Texas’ frontiers were being expanded in the late 1800s, railroads from all points of the compass met in Fayette County. In the 20th century, two of the major U. S. highways, 77 & 90, crossed in Schulenburg.
